Michael Evans was born in Rome, NY.  He grew up in a large family on a farm just north of Rome.  Michael showed an interest and ability in all aspects of art at an early age.   While in High School he won his first honor; Gold Key award for Scholastic Achievement in Art in New York State. After earning his BS in Education, he moved to Boston.  He has resided in Attleboro since 1997.

He has had an interesting mix of work history including working on a lobster boat in the early 1980’s to being a corporate trainer, supervisor, business analyst and finally a project manager and Assistance Vice President at a major investment company.

After many years working in the Mutual Fund industry as a Project Manager, he returned to his first love, Art.  In 1999 he took his first class at the Attleboro Arts Museum.  He has since taken several more classes at the Museum and has gone on to be a member of the Board of Trustees of the Attleboro Arts Museum.

Michael has continued to study by taking classes with local artist, Colleen Vandeventer as well as workshops provided by the Lyme Art Association in Old Lyme, CT.  In 2006 he studied with Monique Martin-Courcy in Quebec, Canada.

Michael is a member of numerous art associations and shows his work frequently.  He has won numerous awards at regional shows for his paintings of the local landscape, including a Juror’s Choice award at the Attleboro Arts Museum most recent group show.

Michael paints on site as well as in his studio in Pawtucket, RI.  He often travels back to the Mohawk Valley in New York in search of subject matter for his paintings.  One of his favorite subjects is the barns of upstate NY, a reminiscence of his childhood growing up on a diary farm.  Other favorite subjects are the beaches and marshes of Cape Cod, the beautiful gardens of Massachusetts and Rhode Island and his own garden.

Michael’s favorite mediums are oil and pastel.  He began panting in soft pastel in 2006 and fell in love with the vibrant colors and the beautiful textures provided by the medium.  He continues to work in both mediums.



More recently he has started to experiment with fabric collage, sometimes leaving the work unpainted, sometimes combining painting over the fabric foundation in oil or acrylic.  These works are more abstract in nature and draw on his past experience as a quilter.  The process of collage allows him to go beyond the constraints of the needle and thread and apply fabric to create a rich texture as the foundation of his work.
